A heavy winter storm that came through Nebraska and Iowa over the weekend was allegedly being blamed for causing multiple vehicle accidents along a 200 mile stretch of Interstate 80. In fact, the National Weather Service said that some areas of east-central Nebraska and southwest Iowa received between 8-9 inches of snow, which made for extremely poor driving conditions. The bad weather, and resultant accidents, then forced various sections of I-80 to be closed thus making driving conditions even more difficult. The accidents varied from single-vehicle accidents, to multi-vehicle accidents, to accidents involving jack-knifed big rigs and tractor-trailers, and more. Although no final tally has been reported as to the number of accidents that took place over the weekend, at least one fatality is being directly associated with icy conditions from the harsh winter storm.
Car accidents occur each and every day. A Nebraska Department of Roads report showed there were more than 32,000 motor vehicle accidents throughout the state, during 2011. While some of those accidents were no doubt as a result of causes beyond our control, many accidents can be traced back to driver error, driver distraction, excessive speed, negligence, product defects and other such factors.
