When large vehicles such as buses and trucks are involved in traffic accidents with smaller vehicles, the results can be deadly. This was clearly demonstrated in a recent eight-vehicle traffic accident that claimed the lives of three people on Highway 59 near mile marker 99, just 10 miles south of Gillette, Wyoming.
According to a recent news story by County 10, the crash occurred in a construction zone where traffic in both directions was at a halt. Drivers going northbound and southbound had to wait their turns to be led across the construction zone in groups by a pilot car. The fatal accident reportedly occurred after a Powder River Transport bus traveling northbound at a high speed slammed into a line of northbound vehicles that were stopped and waiting to be escorted through the construction area. A total of eight vehicles were involved in the accident.
As stated in an Argus Leader article, the eight-vehicle crash resulted in the deaths of three men who were ages 37, 40 and 55. Three others from the lined-up vehicles were injured. None of the bus passengers (about a dozen coal-mine workers) appeared to be injured, according to the article. County 10 reported that the construction zone had the appropriate signs, flaggers and speed reduction postings. At the time that the article was published, the reason for the bus’ collision into the stopped vehicles had not yet been determined.
It is a tragedy when lives are lost because of one wrong turn of events on the road. One person’s mistake while driving can cause serious damages to others—damages that can result in serious injuries, extensive financial losses and even a family’s loss of a loved one. In these types of collisions, there is usually a negligent party that can be held liable for the damages that were caused.
